Legend tells that the Mucalinda nāga, a seven headed serpent-like being rose up to protect the Gautama Buddha after his awakening and enlightenment. When Gautama Buddha meditated under the Bodhi Tree, the sky opened up and proceeded to pelt heavy rainfall on Gautama Buddha. The Mucalinda protected from the ferocious elements for four weeks. When the torrential storms ended the Mucalinda returned to it's human form bowed to the Gautama Buddha and returned to it's place in Nirvana.
